Once again we have proved it………..

Yahoo! on their 3rd visit to the College have recruited ‘4′ students .
During the course of 2 days they were subjected to rigorous tests and interviews . Two students each have been selected to the Product Engineeering department and Global Services Delivery department. 2 students were given job offers while 2 were offered 6 month internships. They were offered a handsome salary of 8.76 -9.76 lakshs/annum

SUBJECTS OF DISCUSSION

To decide whether executive members from 2nd year is needed

To make decision upon the date and other procedures related to
the LINUX WORKSHOP FOR HIGHER SECONDARY STUDENTS.

DECISIONS MADE

Decided not to elect executive members from 2nd years

The date for linux workshop has been decided as 2008 August
16th and 17th

Decided to revise the syllabus for workshop and to complete it before
01-08-08

The Meeting also decided that office automation works should be done
as early as possible

Another suggestion in the meeting was that MACS will make arrangement
to conduct a WORKSHOP ON NETWORKING for macs members as early as
possible.

Another major decision was to select 2nd years and divide the
webmaintenance work
among them

Decided the next meeting to be conducted on 01-08-08 at 01:15 P.M

Linux Workshop July 19th and 20th

MACS(MEC Association of Computer Science) had conducted a Workshop on GNU/Linux for school students on 19th and 20th of JULY .Students from various CBSE schools in and around ernakulum attended the workshop. Bhavans Eroor, Bhavans Varuna, Bhavans Adarsha, Bhavans Girinagar , Chinmaya Vaduthala were a few of the lot who attended the workshop .

The classes where held at the Computer Centre in the College campus . The students along with the teachers coordinated the classes.The classes were taken by students belonging to various semesters beginning from the S3 students .The time schedule of the classes were from 8:30 AM - 3:30 PM. The classes were held based on topics that included the basics of GNU/linux.Students were also given a hands-on session for each of the theory classes that were held .

On the first day it started of with an introduction session on Free and Open source Software ,followed by the installation of a GNU/Linux distribution(Ubuntu 7.10).A basic introduction to the GNU/Linux environment was provided to the audience. The introduction included the package installation , familiarisation of the GNOME desktop and various applications genuinely used in GNU/Linux. Also they where given an idea on the Linux Filesystem , their various heirarchical levels in the filesystem .The afternoon was mainly the hands-on session were students actually installed GNU/Linux into the Computers that were provided to them , on which later on they had all their hands-on session.

On the second day the classes started of with an introduction to the ‘terminal’. And also the students were given a class on most of the general purpose commands that are used in GNU/Linux. The commands included the normal file access , file access permissions and the various manipulation that included directory as well as file manipulations. The audience were given participation certificates by Asst. Professor Mr.Murali.Mohan( Staff in charge ,MACS ).

Welcoming Juniors

MEC Association of Computer Students (MACS) is one of the most active and energetic organizations in our college. We felt that all students, starting with the first years, needed to be aware of the various tasks and ideas implemented by it. MACS gives all students interested in Computer Science, a platform to express their technical views and see their personal ideas take practical shape.

Now on to what we did on Admission Day (not to be confused with D-Day). We decided to hold an introductory session on October 5th for all new admissions into our college in which we would tell them about our activities. MACS also decided to make email IDs for the new students in the MEC domain name. Unlike other registration and admission processes in college that day we decided to give away Ubuntu and Knoppix Linux CDs for FREE. Refusing the money people were offering for the CDs was funny (must admit it was a hard decision!!).

The execution was fairly simple. We had to find the best possible location to place ourselves so that we could attract max attention. And so the desk was placed right next to the Principal’s office. (We even got a cool flex board with the MACS symbol on it).

The response was lukewarm initially but once the admission process got fully underway the rush was pretty surprising. Finally we decided that it would be a good idea to bring in another desk to ease the crowd around the first table!By the end of the day (yep we stayed till past 4 at the desk) we had registered almost all the first years and lateral entries. We also mentioned the fact that the college runs on Linux which surprised quite a few of them (They actually thought the world ran on a certain other OS which shall not be named!!).

To a large number of them who hadn’t used Linux, we gave an assurance that MACS would hold Linux Workshop(s) which would cover all the basic operations associated with the OS.

All in all the operation was a big success, thanks to the great team effort by the MACS executive members Sony, Sreejith, Anirudh, Srijith, Sarath, Jessy, Jowin, Abhay, Saji, Nikil, Vivek, Cijo, Neel.
